The Site Managers Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course is delivered over 5 days. Passing the course provides you with an accredited certificate that is valid for 5 years.

If you wish to continue working as a site manager after this time, you will need to undertake a refresher course (normally lasting 2 days) to renew your certificate for a further 5 years.

Why is SMSTS Important?

If you are working in the construction industry as a site manager, a qualification such as SMSTS is essential in proving your suitability for employment and your commitment to health and safety within the industry. The certificate was specially developed to give site managers an overview of their legal responsibilities, not just for health and safety, but the welfare of workers onsite.

Nowadays, SMSTS is a prerequisite for applying for many construction job posts particularly when considering medium to large companies that tend to have larger workforces. It’s a recognised qualification across the UK and is accredited by the CITB. It’s also recognised by BuildUK as an industry standard.

The construction industry, more than any other in the UK, has a higher level of injuries within the workplace. Qualifications such as SMSTS were created to improve standards across the board and reduce the potential for accidents on construction sites. More and more employers are looking for site managers with an SMSTS certificate not just to ensure greater safety on site but to help prevent injuries and reduce liability.

  • How to compile method statements and carry out risk assessments.
  • Managing occupational health monitoring onsite.

Assessment is through an end of course exam and various exercises that are carried out during the 5 days. The exercises can be undertaken as a group or as an individual. For example, you will be put into groups on the course to practice implementing health and safety legislation. Another exercise involves giving a site briefing.

In the final test, you need to answer 25 multiple choice questions which cover all areas of the course. This must be completed within 30 minutes.

Once you have completed the course and been successful, you will be awarded the SMSTS certificate which will remain valid for the next 5 years.
